AREP'S ADIABATIC URBAN COOLING PROTOTYPE SELECTED FOR THE SEOUL 2021 BIENNALE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM

AREP's adiabatic urban cooling prototype, a project for a natural alternative to air conditioning, was selected following an international call for projects as a contribution to the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021 (SBAU 2021).

Initiated in one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, Vietnam, this project responds to the problem of increasingly extreme heat waves facing Vietnamese cities with a low environmental impact, without using energy or refrigerant gas.
Adiabatic cooling is based on a simple and natural principle: in order to evaporate, water needs energy, which will be "absorbed" by the heat of the ambient air, thus generating a cooling effect. AREP's project is to innovatively crossbreed this device with local resources and know-how in terms of arts and crafts, wrapped in a naturally resistant hyperboloid parametric structure. It is thus based on Hanoi's blue beer glasses, handmade from recycled materials, which are highly resistant, cheap and very functional. AREP will hence be able to display a genuine functional urban adiabatic cooling system at SBAU 2021 to be held from September to November 2021 on the theme "CROSSROADS, Building the Resilient City".
A prototype soon to be built near the AREP South Asia offices in Hanoi will ensure the feasibility of the design while involving all employees. AREP's concept is to design a sustainable project that can be adapted to each local context, Therefore, instead of shipping Hanoi’s glass to Seoul, we propose that our installation for the SBAU 2021 should rather be fully made of bamboo sourced in South Korea, keeping the principle of art & craft, and using a low-tech, bio-sourced material

With this project, AREP demonstrates its ability to invent and provide creative, simple and durable solutions for resilient city planning, low carbon architecture and ecological design using advanced digital tools.
